Housing Plan Measures Proposed by the Government

The Government has announced 12 new measures aimed at providing citizens with more housing, better regulation and greater support.

Access to housing, which affects millions of people, is the focus of the Government's new package of measures. During the forum "Housing, the Fifth Pillar of the Welfare State," Pedro Sánchez presented 12 initiatives based on more housing, improved regulation, and increased support to ensure affordable and dignified housing.

Spain currently has only 2.5% public housing, compared to 14% in France and 34% in the Netherlands. With housing prices having risen 48% over the last decade, the Government seeks to curb the social inequality created by the housing market and lay the foundations for a structural change in housing access.

Below are the main measures included in the new package announced by the Government to address the housing crisis and ensure access to decent and affordable housing:

These measures will be accompanied by a reform of the Land Law, aimed at reducing bureaucracy, speeding up construction processes, and expanding available land.

However, their success will depend on coordination between the central Government, regional authorities, and municipalities, as well as overcoming resistance from the private sector, particularly regarding tax policies for tourist and foreign-owned properties. Furthermore, initiatives like the Strategic Housing Project (PERTE) will require technological advancements and specialized workforce training.
